A ‘proving ground’ for their Parisian brand La Biosthetique, husband and wife duo Rob and Karen Aubin proudly opened Salon Franc a little over a year ago with the goal to deliver beauty and hair under one roof. Sitting down with Karen, High Street Traders Association was able to get an insight into the passion behind the brand and learn more about their vision.

Offering a range of services; from blow waves to make up application, Karen emphasises Salon Franc’s success rests upon what isn’t on the pricelist. “We offer a higher level of service, professionalism and an underlying sense of care”, she says. “Being family owned, our salon team is also a family which is why we ensure each and every customer experiences the heartbeat of our business”.

A Salon Franc experience is unlike any other. The team is a culmination of experts whom go through rigorous and ongoing training to ensure a Salon Franc offer a high level of technically skilled and genuinely passionate service to all clients. Karen highlights, “On first impression clients are impressed by the ‘smaller’ details, such as the tea and towel service, facials at the basin, hand massages and more.”

Their emphasis on quality experience and service serves as no surprise that they are rated with the esteemed privilege of being known as a ‘Total Beauty Concept”. “Only a handful of salons fall in this category, which sees these salons offer a full suite of La Biosthetique hair colour, hair care, skincare and makeup. The stylists also undergo ongoing and intense training that is controlled by stringent European standards.” With trends always changing, it is reassuring to know the team at Salon Franc are equipped with the skillset to deliver optimum results. When asked of what is currently trending, “you’ll see there is a push for creative colouring that transcends all age groups. Older women are experimenting with blondes and tones… and hair extensions are now being used not only for length but volume (which) can make an immediate change”, Karen says.

Given the close tie with the La Biosthetique brand, as well as owning a concept store in their hometown of Sydney, the Aubin’s Armadale store sought to bring the ‘Total Beauty Concept’ to Victoria. With a name paying homage to the couple’s Parisian heritage and from the currency of France, the ‘franc’, Salon Franc prides its vision to “live life beautifully”.

Never straying far from the beauty industry, Rob and Karen Aubin have always had a passion for all things beauty. “Rob started out tagging bottles for Helene Curtis in a warehouse, then ran ShortCuts (a salon-based point of sale system) in the U.S, whilst my background is digital design.” Together, this dynamic duo have collaborated passions to bring you the modern, clean and yet inviting feel that is Salon Franc. And if you’re not enticed yet, just ask the long list of A-list clients to convince you. “We’ve worked with a few. Think The Real Housewives of Melbourne and the ‘WAGs’ of the Australian cricket world. We also work alongside a lot of Australian fashion labels such as Romance Was Born, Christopher Esber and Pared Eyewear”.
